SURFACE TRANSPORTATION BOARD RANKED AMONG BEST PLACES TO WORK

The December edition of Washingtonian magazine has named the Surface Transportation Board one of the 50 Great Places to Work for 2013. The Board is one of only four federal agencies to earn this distinction.

Federal agencies were chosen based on a combination of Partnership for Public Service rankings and hiring potential. For four years in a row, the Board ranked No. 1 among small federal agencies by the Partnership.

About these ratings, STB Chairman Daniel R. Elliott III said,

"I am humbled, again, to have led the Board throughout this period of strong employee dedication and satisfaction. Our employees can be proud of the contributions they all make to implement the Board's critical role in our nation's transportation network."

The STB, which currently has 138 employees, was ranked at the top of agencies with more than 100 and fewer than 1,000 full-time, permanent employees. The Board was ranked No. 1 according to an overall index score measuring the performance of agencies related to employee satisfaction and commitment. The Partnership's findings can be viewed at http://www.ourpublicservice.org/OPS/.

The Board is charged with the economic regulation of America's freight railroads, solving rate and service disputes, as well as passenger rail responsibilities. The agency's decisions are independent but the Board is administratively associated with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Board workplace policies foster a work-life balance through flexible work schedules. The Board also has an open-door management environment that encourages innovation. The Board's work environment helps retain skilled workers and recruit top-tier job candidates. For current hiring opportunities at the Board, see www.usajobs.gov.
