SURFACE TRANSPORTATION BOARD ANNOUNCES GENERAL COUNSEL CRAIG KEATS NAMED TRANSPORTATION LAWYER OF THE YEAR BY THE FEDERAL BAR ASSOCIATION

Craig Keats, General Counsel of the Surface Transportation Board, has been named the 2018 John T. Stewart, Jr. Transportation Lawyer of the Year by the Transportation and Transportation Security Law Section of the Federal Bar Association.

Mr. Keats is a longtime employee of the Board and its predecessor agency, the former Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC). Among the many positions he has held at the Board and the ICC, Mr. Keats has served as advisor to several agency Board Members and Chairmen. He has worked with the Board's Office of the General Counsel since 1980, serving as Deputy General Counsel since 2000, and serving as General Counsel since 2013. He has briefed and argued many of the agency's highest-profile cases.

In his acceptance remarks yesterday evening, Mr. Keats dedicated his award to former ICC Chairman Dan O’Neal, former ICC and STB General Counsel Henri Rush, and former ICC and STB Chairman Linda Morgan, all of whom passed away in recent years. “They were three giants in the transportation world who shaped my career,” said Mr. Keats. “I also want to thank Chairman Ann Begeman and Vice Chairman Deb Miller for their support.”

This is the second time Mr. Keats has been recognized with this honor, his first time having won the award in 2000. “The agency and the public are so fortunate to have such a dedicated public servant. Not only is Craig a lawyer’s lawyer, but he is a trusted leader, advisor, and mentor,” said Chairman Begeman and Vice Chairman Miller.
